10 Dark Anime Recommendations

There are many viewers who crave the most gruesome and darkest animes out there which is capable of sending a shiver up their spine. I, being one of them, have watched numerous dark animes which I will be listing here, ranked with respect to their "darkness". And this list is strictly curated in my opinion and among the animes I have watched

So, in this blog, we will explore each of these dark anime series, dissecting their unique aspects, unraveling their themes, and uncovering why I think they are one of the most darkest out there. thumbnail

10. Elfen Lied

Elfen Lied explores a gruesome and dark story of a little girl named Lucy. The story starts with Lucy, a genetically modified being with unique but unnatural abilities, who is out for revenge relationg to her present condition. This story deals with discrimination, trauma, darkness within humans and also has borderline incest.

Another is a chilling tale of supernatural horror, as an unknown curse consumes a school due to which it leads to gruesome deaths, paranoia, and the unsettling exploration of the thin line between life and death. Be ready because this one will knock you off youre chair; it just always keeps you on the edge.

8. Ergo Proxy

Ergo Proxy follows a dystopian journey, exploring a complex plot of philosophical concepts, identity crisis, and the search for truth in a perishing society haunted by mysterious creatures and psychological torment. This story follows Re-l who is trying to find out the truth behind the cause of collapse of the society.


7. Akame ga Kill

Akame ga Kill explored the merciless world of assassins, political corruption, and morality, where the fight for justice is stained by violence. It follows the story of Night Raid, an assassination branch of the Revolutionary Army, attempting to overthrow the present tyrranical Prime Minister.

6. Perfect Blue

Perfect Blue is a series that deeply delves into the darkside of fame and the entertainment industry as a whole. It follows the life of an ex-idol, Mima, who left her idol group to pursue her acting career when suddenly a stalker who cannot accept Mima's quitting of the idol industry starts aggressively stalking her.

5. The Garden of Sinners

Garden of Sinners follows the story of a girl who was met with an accident and has acquired an unusual ability called 'The Mystic Eyes of Death Perception" which makes everything and everyone she looks at "killable". This series immerses in an intricate story-telling with stunning animation and beautiful soundtracks.

4. Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul follows the story of a young boy, Ken Kaneki who has been turned into a flesh-eating ghoul due to an unforeseen circumstance and is going through an identity crisis as to who he really is...A Ghoul or a Human.

3. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a psychological roller coaster, where existential crisis and complex relationships are explored of a boy named Shinji Ikari who has been made to pilot a mecha machine of unknown origin. Soon, it turns out that the co-pilots and the machines he has, have originated from something unfathomable.

2. Re:Zero

It is a story of a high-school boy Natsuki Subaru, who is suddenly teleported to another world and is revived everytime he dies in that world. Repeated revivals takes a toll on his mind, where on the other hand he has a duty to protect his loved ones from the circumstances that involves him, dying in an inhumane manner.

1. Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan follows the life of a boy, Eren Jaeger who has a duty to protect his friends and his kind from the abominable man-eating monsters that has been tormenting them for a long time. To be honest, anything I say about this will be spoiler.

Once again, the manga has been put on indefinite hiatus despite the author of the series, Yoshihiro Togashi's attempts to manage his back pain and work simultaneously.
